Types of Climbing Available at the RecPlex

Bouldering (15 Min. Orientation/3:1 Supervision Ratio)

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed without the use of ropes or harnesses. While it can be done without any equipment whatsoever, most climbers use climbing shoes to help secure footholds, chalk to keep their hands dry, and bouldering mats to prevent injuries from falls.

In the RecPlex Climbing Pit, the Bouldering area covers the entire West wall and accommodates from 6-10 different routes at a time (depending on the route setting). The bouldering wall is 12 ft. tall and has a variety of small to large overhangs. This wall varies from easy routes to very challenging routes and is fun for all skill levels.

Autobelay (15 Min. Orientation/3:1 Supervision Ratio)

An autobelay is an automatic belay device that eliminates the need for a human belayer. The auto belay takes up the slack as a climber ascends and safely controls the descent when the climber lets go or falls.

In the RecPlex Climbing Pit, the Autobelay routes are depicted by the yellow ropes attached to a device at the top of the climbing wall. The Autobelay routes are intermittent with the top-rope belay routes on the East and South walls of the Climbing Pit.

Autobelaying is a great way to get into climbing due to the ease-of-use of these devices and the lack of a commitment needed from others. Once you get acquainted with these devices, it is as easy as clip in, climb, descend, and repeat.

Top-Rope Belay (2.5 Hr. Orientation/1:1 Supervision Ratio)

Top rope climbing (or top roping) is a style in climbing in which the climber is securely attached to a rope which then passes up, through an anchor system at the top of the climb, and down to a belayer at the foot of the climb. The belayer takes in slack rope throughout the climb, so that if at any point the climber were to lose their hold, they would not fall more than a short distance.

In the RecPlex Climbing Pit, the Top-Rope routes are depicted by the blue ropes. The Top-Rope routes are intermittent with the Autobelay routes on the East and South walls of the Climbing Pit.

Due to the orientation and supervision ratio requirements, this type of climbing is recommended for more advanced climbers interested in learning belay practices and completing a belay test.
